La Dispute nazwę mają francuską. Zaczerpnęli ją z osiemnastowiecznej eksperymentalnej jednoaktówki Dysputa autorstwa Pierre’a de Marivaux. Sam zespół jest jednak amerykański, powstał w 2004 roku w Grand Rapids w stanie Michigan.
